Can you afford to leave this much money on the table?

Never, in my wildest dreams, did I fully understand what I was leaving on the table when I didn’t ask for more money.

Lisa Stotlar, CareerGenerations co-founder, recently underlined that point in her talk on “Smart Salary Negotiations” at a ProMatch General Meeting.  ProMatchers had the chance to practice both sides of the negotiation —  as the hiring manager and as the candidate.

Lessons learned: Negotiating the offer is a learned skill. Negotiating the offer is essential. Negotiating the offer can earn you hundreds of thousands of dollars over your career lifetime.

Why don’t job seekers negotiate? The single biggest reason is fear. Salary.com surveyed 800 job seekers and here are their findings:

  • Fear of losing the offer: 21%
  • It’s unpleasant: 19%
  • Lack of confidence: 15%
  • No negotiating skills: 15%
  • Satisfied with original offer: 11%
  • Other: 12%
